The Economic Implications of Edge-Directed Routing: A Network Operator’s Perspective

چکیده
Edge-directed routing, a paradigm where sources and sinks of traffic, rather than the network, specify the communication path has recently gained attention as a means to deal effectively with potential conflicts that may arise between various stakeholders in the future Internet. In this paper, we use a simple economic model to show that contrary to current economic thinking, networks can deploy edge-directed routing without raising prices, provided that the service results in a relative increase in external traffic that outweighs the relative increase in costs. However, when edge-directed routing merely results in traffic shift from one path to another, then price increases are required to make it economically viable. Hence, we recommend that edge-directed routing protocols put in place payment mechanisms and support systems in their design to facilitate various pricing strategies.

Pricing Networks with Selfish Routing∗
We study the negative consequences of selfish behavior in networks and economic means of influencing such behavior. We focus on a simple model of selfish routing, defined by Wardrop [12] and first studied from a theoretical computer science perspective by Roughgarden and Tardos [10]. In this model, we are given a directed network in which each edge possesses a latency function, describing the c...
متن کاملBroadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach
While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...
متن کاملA ROUTING METHODOLOGY FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TRANSPORTATION TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ROAD NETWORK
Abstract: The shipments of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) induce various risks to the road network. Today, one of the major considerations of transportation system managers is HAZMATs shipments, due to the increasing demand of these goods (because it is more used in industry, agriculture, medicine, etc.), and the rising number of incidents that are associated to hazardous materials. This paper ...
متن کاملA Time Dependent Pollution Routing Problem in Multi-graph
This paper considers a time dependent(the travel time is not constant throughout the day) pollution routing problem (TDPRP), which aids the decision makers in minimizing travel time, toll cost and emitted pollution cost. In complexity of urban areas most of the time one point is accessible from another with more than one edge. In contrast to previous TDPRP models, which are designed with only ...
متن کاملA Novel Sustainable Closed-loop Supply Chain Network Design by Considering Routing and Quality of Products
One of the strategic decisions that can be made in supply chain is designing its network which has high impact on costs, and satisfaction level of customers. This paper focuses on designing a distribution network including determining the number and location of facilities, how to allocate the customers in network, and also determining the extent of carrying different products from different ori...
